Smoking Massey 35

I have a Massey 35, 3 cyl. Perkins that spews a huge amount of black exhaust, and also lacks power.
I replaced the oil in the air cleaner and replaced the two fuel filters. I'm I correct in now moving on to the fuel injectors?

    Thanks, Rob.

    Hi Rob,

Black smoke usually indicates burning oil. Therefore it is likely that the engine is worn and letting too much oil past the rings (because a controlled amount is supposed to pass by the rings normally) and into the cylinder, this oil will then be igniting with the diesel and causing black smoke.

    Hope that helps,

    Steve (VTE).

Hi Bob,first of all I would say is black smoke is caused by to much fuel and not enough fresh air to maintain a correct mixture, personally i would desconnect the air pipe and let her take fresh un filtered air, then see if it makes a differance, some times these pipes get soft and suck in causing air restrection, have you got a manifold cold start device, these have been known to leak oil into inlet manifold, let us know how you get on

I had the injectors tested, and one was faulty. Bought a new one but the tractor still smokes. I just noticed fuel bubbling from the base of one of the injectors. Is it perhaps not seated properly? Could this be causing the smoking?
I'm gonna try going without the air cleaner, as Powershaft suggested. When I take the breather stack off, I notice air being pushed out - should it not be sucking in air?
    Thanks for the help.

Alright, removed the complete air cleaner and ran the tractor for about an hour. Really did not notice a difference in smoke, however, I did notice that where the rubber hose to the cleaner would normally be attached to the engine (next to the preheat starter element), that there was an exhaust coming from there and that when the engine would bog down (as it often does) I could see combustion (flames). Is this normal?

Finally brought the tractor into a shop. Turns out it has a blown head gasket.
