MF35 Hedgerow Tractor

A few days ago we wrote about ‘hedgerow’ tractors and included a few photos of Grey Fergies (oh, and also it was pointed out by Hauker from Iceland, a Ford 8N).

The response from everyone was quite overwhelming and we received lots of emails about tractors you’d rescued and restored.  Including this photo from Mike, up in the very North of Scotland.

Mike now has this 3 cylinder MF 35 in his shed where it is undergoing restoration.  And if you think this photo is a bit better than the normal snaps that Vintage Tractor Engineer subjects you readers to, well that’s because Mike is also a professional photographer (link to Mike’s photography site).

Hedgerow Grey Fergie Tractors

We’ve all seen old tractors left behind a farm yard, in the corner of a field or under a hedge row (hence the title).  But of all the hedgerow tractors, there can be none more common to see than the Grey Ferguson (English or American built variants).

Thankfully these sights are becoming less common today, as enthusiasts buy them up to restore.  I just thought I’d show you a few of my favourite photos of Fergies that have been left to deteriorate.

County Tractor Spares

We get lots of people asking us where to go for County tractor spares, so we’ve compiled a list.

If you supply County parts and wish to be added to the list then just leave a comment in the box at the bottom of the page.

TE 20 Hydraulics – Making Of The DVD

We have now completed filming the Hydraulics DVD for the TE 20 tractor range.  Everything went pretty much to plan with the filming, although the sheep in the nearby field didn’t seem to underatand we needed them to keep quite when we were recording the audio.  Some of the scenes needed several ‘takes’ to capture some footage without the sheep noise, but even then there is the odd bit of bleating in the background.

Filming of Ferguson TE 20 Hydraulics DVD

As I said previously, the oil was all contaminated with water and looked a sickly orange colour.  There was also about half an inch of dirt and deposits in the bottom of the transmission casting.  Either this dirt or the moisture in the oil was the probable cause of the control valve been seized in one position.  The control valve oscilating rod had also become detached from the control valve.  We don’t know if the cause of this was the stuck control valve or if the detached oscilating rod was the cause of the stuck control valve.  What matters is that it was relatively easy to free off the control valve.

The pistons of the hydraulic pump were scored from the dirt in the system (there isn’t a filter on the TE20’s so that probably didn’t help this situation), but the vavles and everything else seemed OK.  Although the control valve had been stuck it was in remarkably good condition and still a good fit in its body.  However, it is very difficult to assess the fit of the control valve as only the slightest bit of wear can cause problems.

We would normally have used a repair kit on this pump to bring it back to optimal performance, but the owner of the tractor simply wanted the control valve unseizing.  So on the video we just went through how to remove and strip down the pump and then how to rebuild it.  We also looked at the vavles, lift cylinder and cross shaft.  The pump went back together using the existing components and then we tested it out.  Everything worked just fine and in fact we left the cultivator in the raised position over night (with engine stopped) and the next day it was still right at the top of the lift, just where we had left it.

We put a pressure gauge onto the system and tested when the oil was warm.  It read 2000 psi.  The rated pressure is 2500 psi, so this did show that the scores in the pistons were causing a less than optimal pressure output.  This didn’t really matter, as it showed the consequences of refitting the slightly worn pump components.  The point of the DVD was to show how to strip, assess and rebuild the pump and other components of the system – which we were able to do.

The concept of our DVD’s is that if an untrained person watches them then they will be able to do the maintenance task on their own tractor.  I think we have achieved this again with this DVD.

Ferguson FE35 Restoration, Nearly Completed

We’ve written before about Dave’s grey gold FE35 and red/grey MF35.  Well Dave has been busy over in Australia, working away at his red and grey 35.  Here are some photos and video of the nearly completed tractor.

Dave says about the restoration…

Thought I’d send a few pics and a short video of the progress, Fergie is nearly finished now with only the cowl hatch, LH front wheel and seat needing a little massaging.

Hood came up well, but the lower front panel didn’t survive the rust removal and beating, just too far gone, and had to be replaced, the crank hole is a different shape to the original, but it will have to do.

Note the Ferguson 35 side decals, had them made to match the originals, they aren’t perfect, but probably good enough, got a few spares, thought i might send some to Per in Canada to spur him on.

Also need to repaint the dash again, changed paint cans half way through and the colour has turned out slightly different. a message in there for wary restorers.

Anyway,
cheers from OZ,

Next is the grey/gold,………
I’m going to take a heap more photos of the “before” condition before i start this one, something i neglected to do with the Red / Grey, on reflection, i have very few photos of her before i started.

Dave.

Now for the photos…

And the video…

We’ve also had some photos sent in from Jeff in Canada, who has a tractor of a very similar serial number.  Jeff’s tractor also has the Ferguson badge on the front and the Ferguson sticker along the side of the bonnet – so it looks as though Dave was correct to have the Ferguson stickers made.
