We often get emails and photos from customers who have restored their tractors (and it’s great to see how people have got on).
Andrew (who incidently has a quaint little holliday cottage in Whitby) has sent us a video of his grey and red FE35 starting up from cold in winter time…
Andrew thought the video may help people decide if it would be worth spending all the time, effort and expense on reconditioning their engine. I’ll let you decide the answer to that one (but Vintage Tractor Engineer is certain the answer is yes!).
VTE knows that Andrew had a bit of trouble getting the injection pump timing correct and had to go back and make some adjustments, but perserverence eventually paid off and that starting performance is a credit to Andrew, his hard work and attention to detail.
Gunter’s FE35
Gunter has also been hard at work restoring his grey and gold FE35 and has uploaded some photos. Impressive stuff!

certainly looks worth doing to me, good work! Also out of interest, as I’m currently in the process of re-building my 23c engine, how much did you increase the port size by and what was the final size of the ports? Thanks.
Tell me about the 35 standard engine and hard starting! I have been around them since 1962 and have been plagued with hard starting for years, If the weather was cold forget it, until recently.
It was when the injection pump started to leak to the point something had to be done. I pull the injector pump blocking the fly wheel and marked other setting at given points to insure that the overhauled pump would have some hope of being able to function when re-installed.
My diesel tractor mechanic (professional) told me “good luck”. He would be looking for the smoke from my shop when I tried to start that engine for the first time.
I do not know why but after I installed that pump and hit the starter it was unbelievable. I was an instant sucess. The engine ran at a perfect idle. I did twike the setting a mico a few days later but other then that it is amazing. Cool weather, warm weather I have and instant start with about one or two revolutions of the engine and a perfect idle, no smoke, no knocking, no warm up, no nothing.
I have come to believe that the hard starting of 23c standard engine is all related to that model’s injector pump and nothing else. Think about it. – Cheers
Out of interest how much did you have to pay to have the cylinder head ports enlarged.
I am very happy I have fitted the Perkins engine on my 35. Massey Ferguson 35 tractors start better than the 4 cal. engine, when they are in original condition 🙂 !!!
