I’ve just got my 1953 MF 28 running, but have struck a problem.
It has jammedin gear, 3rd or 4th, not sure which. Happened after I had it in reverse for about 70m, took it out of reverse facing slightly downhill, and then it somehow got stuck in gear. The next job was to change the gearbox oil which looks milky. Looking in the oil port – can’t see any obvious problems.
Thanks,Derek
Hi Derek,
I think I’m correct in saying that the the Ferguson 28 is the equivalent of what we call the TE20 in England or the TO20 in the states (correct me if I’m wrong) – in other words the ‘Grey Fergie’.
Is the gear lever tight or slack? If it is slack then the gear lever will have come out of the selectors. If it is tight then it may be that it all needs realigning. Either way you will need to remove the gear lever, check it for damage and make sure that all the selectors are alligned in their central position. If one of the selectors is out of its central position (therefore the tractor is in gear as you say it is) then you will need to take it out of gear before refitting the gear lever. You may need to use a pry-bar to take it out of gear whilst gently rocking the back wheels to-and-fro to help it release out of gear.
If all the selectors are lined up and it is still in gear it points towards a broken selector. You will need to take the gearbox top off, split the tractor between the gearbox and rear transmission housing so that you can take out the selector rails. It is, however, rare for a selector to break.
Hopefully it should be a relatively easy repair.
Steve.
Steve,
Thanks for that info – yes the TE20. The gear lever was loose, and as you suggested it was a problem with one of the selectors that the selector must have jumped when I was swapping between forward and reverse gears. It was simple to take the filler cap off and pry the far selector back into line – problem solved.
Simple – when you know how.
Thanks again
Derek
hi all having problems with tea20 fuel getting hot and boiling cause close to manifold and rocker cover was thinking heat shield between fuel tank and engine ,which can get from auto parts place and maybe cement sheet as well bit more protection ,yes mine stuck in 1st gear at present will try removing gear shift lever and aligning selector and then washing out gearbox maybe rust etc from milking coloured oil , fingers crossed will work

Steve.
hi, i have a massey ferguson mf35 diesel 3 cylinde perkins farm tractor with it’s gear stuck in reverse. the gear shift lever is loose, moving freely, to and fro, side to side and all around. the oil is merky, should it be? please help.
I have a 135 that got stuck in reverse recently. Tried the normal things but no luck. As I shut it down I thought the pressure would be reversed as the engine costed down so I pulled the shifter to first and she poped out with no resistance what so ever.
hi im a 15 yr old lad who has also got a TE20 petrol paraffin.and i when my dad bought it it didn’t run, he had it running a long time ago, may about 6 years or so. i have now decided to get it running and put it in to shows. the engine runs fine. but my gear box is jammed too, my gear lever you could move it side to side fine but not in to any of the gear ports, and i have had the gear lever off, but i don’t know what I’m looking at to see what is wrong, i’m in to my mechanics but never done a gear box before. if anyone could help me out e.g step by step what to do, and also on the bottom of the gear lever the is a ring with a bit missing. does that have to be facing any way in particular or is it just a washer?? any help would be good. thank you,
I have a TO 35 (59-60?) which was stuck in gear. Problem was small retaining springs forward of rails. Aftermarket springs were longer and stronger so you have to really mean it when you shift but are functional.
Hi Steve Iv`e had a similar problem with my fergi 35, it would not engage into any gear when I was showing my son how to drive the tractor, going from 1st to reverse and then back again a few times in the field, getting him used to the clutch.
Have taken off the gear leaver all seems to function ok pushing the selectors back and forth, but haven`t put back together yet, any suggestions what may have caused this.
Regards Ian
Hi Brian,
If your pump has a filter drain the oil and you can access it from the cover where the pto lever comes out of.
Easier to do if you remove the wheel and fender.
Steve.
hope someone can help me. I have a 1955 feruson TO 35 and need to know how to change or clean the oil filter for the 3 point and rear end. The 3 point wont work in the cold weather and friends told me the filter might be plugged. I cant find a casting on the rear casing that looks like a filter holder. The oil is milky and it needs a change, is the capacity 8 gallons? what weight?
It uses 90 wt mineral oil. This can be bought at Tractor Supply or other farm supply stores. It uses the same as old Fords.
